CD Review ABS Magazine Online Al Corte’ – Mojo

“Mojo” Album Cover

When we discover who are the musicians who make up the group behind singer Al Corte ‘, we know we are in Memphis! And not just anywhere: at Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studio, with the High Rhythm Section (Leroy Hodges Jr. on bass, Michael Toles on guitar, Rev. Charles Hodges Sr on B3, and Steve Potts on drums). To continue in the dream, join the recording Brad Webb on slide, John Nemeth on harmonica, Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell on piano and synth (he also produces the album) and Ron Miller, multi- instrumentalist and composer of all twelve titles of the disc. And that’s not all. The Royal Singers, Royal Strings, Royal Horns and The Tennessee Mass Choir (directed by Jason Clark) are also there according to the faces to offer to this recording a relief quite unusual. We almost forget the leader … Singer, percussionist and co-author of three of the songs on the album, Al Corte ‘has fallen into singing since his youngest age, through various styles including blues-rock and doo wop. This is a very good singer who leads brilliantly this recording which had to be, for this fan of soul, an unparalleled treat. He can be proud of it. – Marcel Bénédit
